Special Needs Dentistry

Dental care adapted for patients with disabilities, complex medical conditions, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities.

Dental Care for All Abilities

Everyone deserves access to dental care, regardless of physical ability, medical history, or behavioural challenges. At Divine Dental Care in Croydon, we provide dental treatment for patients whose needs go beyond what a standard dental appointment can accommodate. This includes people with physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, acquired brain injury, dementia, complex medical conditions, and severe dental anxiety.

We understand that visiting a dentist can be particularly challenging for people with special needs and their carers. Our approach is to work with each patient and their support network to make dental visits as manageable and comfortable as possible, adapting our environment, communication, and clinical techniques to suit individual requirements.

Book a first visit: call (03) 9725 8040 or book online. Our Croydon practice is open six days a week, Saturdays included, with parking on site.

Who Special Needs Dentistry Is For

Our special needs dental service is designed for patients who experience difficulties in a standard dental setting, including people with:

  • Physical disabilities: conditions that affect mobility, dexterity, or the ability to sit in a standard dental chair for extended periods
  • Intellectual disabilities: including Down syndrome, intellectual developmental disorders, and conditions that affect understanding and cooperation during treatment
  • Autism spectrum disorder: patients who may experience sensory overload, difficulty with unfamiliar environments, or challenges with communication
  • Severe dental anxiety or dental phobia: patients whose anxiety prevents them from attending routine dental care
  • Dementia and cognitive decline: patients who may be confused or distressed in clinical settings
  • Complex medical histories: patients on multiple medications, with bleeding disorders, heart conditions, or other medical conditions that require careful coordination of dental treatment
  • Sensory processing differences: heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or tastes

The Maroondah area, including Croydon, Ringwood, Heathmont, and Mooroolbark, has a number of supported accommodation providers, disability day programs, and aged care facilities. We welcome patients from these services and are happy to coordinate with support staff and carers.

Our Practice Environment

Our Croydon practice includes several features that help make dental visits more accessible and comfortable for patients with special needs:

  • Wheelchair access: our practice has step-free entry and treatment rooms that accommodate wheelchairs. On-site parking is available close to the entrance
  • Ceiling-mounted TVs: each treatment room has a screen on the ceiling above the dental chair. Patients can watch shows, movies, or calming content during treatment, which can be a useful distraction technique for anxious patients, children, and patients with intellectual disabilities
  • Noise-cancelling headphones: available for patients who are sensitive to the sounds of dental equipment. Patients can listen to their own music or use the headphones for noise reduction
  • Flexible appointment scheduling: we can schedule longer appointments to allow more time for familiarisation, breaks during treatment, and a less rushed experience. Early morning or quieter times of day can also be arranged
  • Familiar faces: where possible, we aim to schedule patients with the same dentist and dental assistant at each visit to build familiarity and trust

Our Approach

Every patient is different, and we do not take a one-size-fits-all approach. Before or at the first appointment, we take time to understand:

  • The patient's specific needs, preferences, and triggers
  • Their medical history and any medications that may affect treatment
  • Communication preferences: whether the patient communicates verbally, uses communication aids, or relies on a carer to convey information
  • Previous dental experiences, including any that were difficult or traumatic
  • What helps the patient feel comfortable: whether that is a particular routine, having a carer present, holding a comfort item, or having breaks during treatment

We encourage carers, family members, and support workers to be involved in the process. You are welcome to visit the practice before the first appointment so the patient can become familiar with the environment. We can also arrange a brief introductory visit where no treatment is performed, just an opportunity to meet the team, sit in the chair, and become comfortable with the surroundings.

Sedation Options

For patients whose anxiety, behavioural challenges, or medical conditions make treatment difficult without pharmacological assistance, we offer sedation options:

  • Oral sedation: medication taken before the appointment that helps reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. The patient remains conscious but in a calmer state. This can be appropriate for patients who are cooperative enough to take medication but need help managing anxiety during treatment
  • Local anaesthetic: standard numbing of the treatment area to eliminate pain during procedures
  • Referral for general anaesthetic: for patients who cannot tolerate treatment in a dental chair setting even with sedation, we can arrange referral to a hospital-based dental service for treatment under general anaesthetic. This is typically reserved for patients with severe intellectual disabilities, extreme dental anxiety, or extensive treatment needs

The choice of sedation is made in consultation with the patient (where possible), their carer or guardian, and taking into account their medical history and the nature of the dental treatment required.

Preventive Care and Oral Hygiene Support

For patients with disabilities or complex needs, maintaining oral health between dental visits can be challenging. Difficulties with manual dexterity, dependence on carers for oral hygiene, medication side effects (such as dry mouth), dietary factors, and sensory aversions to brushing all contribute to higher rates of dental disease in this population.

We work with patients and their carers to develop practical oral hygiene strategies, including:

  • Recommending adapted toothbrushes (electric, modified-grip, or three-sided brushes)
  • Advising on appropriate toothpaste (flavour, texture, fluoride concentration)
  • Providing guidance for carers on assisted brushing techniques
  • Applying fluoride varnish and fissure sealants to reduce decay risk
  • Scheduling more frequent check-up and clean appointments for patients at higher risk

NDIS and Funding

We welcome NDIS participants at our Croydon practice. Dental treatment may be funded through NDIS plans where the dental condition is directly related to or significantly impacted by the participant's disability. The availability and extent of dental funding depends on each individual's NDIS plan.

If you are unsure whether dental treatment is covered under your plan, we recommend speaking with your NDIS plan manager or support coordinator. We can provide written treatment plans and quotes to assist with funding applications or claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is special needs dentistry?

Special needs dentistry focuses on providing dental care for patients whose medical, physical, intellectual, or behavioural conditions require modifications to standard dental treatment. This includes patients with physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety disorders, dementia, complex medical histories, and sensory processing differences.

What accommodations do you offer for patients with special needs?

Our Croydon practice offers wheelchair access, ceiling-mounted TVs for distraction during treatment, noise-cancelling headphones, flexible appointment scheduling (including longer appointment times when needed), oral sedation options, and a team experienced in working with anxious and medically complex patients. We adapt our approach to each patient's individual requirements.

What sedation options are available?

We offer oral sedation (medication taken before the appointment to reduce anxiety) and local anaesthetic to keep treatment comfortable. For patients who require deeper sedation or general anaesthetic, we can arrange referral to an appropriate facility. Your dentist will discuss sedation options based on your medical history and the treatment required.

Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?

Yes. Our practice at 59 Wicklow Avenue, Croydon has wheelchair-accessible entry, treatment rooms that accommodate wheelchairs, and accessible bathroom facilities. On-site parking is available close to the entrance.

Do you accept NDIS patients?

We welcome NDIS participants. Dental treatment may be funded through NDIS plans where dental care is directly related to a participant's disability. Coverage depends on the individual's NDIS plan and how it is managed. We recommend checking with your NDIS plan manager or support coordinator about dental funding eligibility before your appointment. We can provide quotes and documentation to assist with claims.

Do I need a referral for special needs dental care?

No referral is needed to book an appointment. You are welcome to call our practice directly to discuss your requirements. If you have a support worker, carer, or family member who would like to speak with us before the appointment to discuss specific needs, we encourage this. For complex medical cases, we may liaise with your GP or specialist as part of your care.
