What Are Dentures?

Dentures are commonly referred to as “false teeth”. They are cost-effective removable prosthesis that replace missing teeth, and may be a full denture (replacing all top or bottom teeth), or a partial denture (replacing some missing teeth). Dentures can help you to continue to eat and drink normally and can also help to maintain your appearance if some of your teeth have become damaged or are missing.

What Materials Are They Made Of?

Full dentures are made of acrylic (plastic) material. Partial dentures can either be made of acrylic or have a metal framework supporting the acrylic.  Recently more lightweight and flexible materials (eg. Valplast) have improved the longevity and break-ability of these prosthesis. The teeth that fit on are most commonly made out of acrylic as well.

How Are They Made?

A series of appointments are required to make them. Impressions (molds) are taken of your teeth and gums, and measurements are taken in order to place the teeth in the correct aesthetic and functional position. We will then check your speech and bite and once everything is confirmed to be fitting and in the right place, they are processed and made into the final prosthesis for fitting in your mouth.

Complications Of Ill-Fitting Dentures

Over time, the gums underneath dentures may shrink and change shape and your prosthesis will no longer fit properly anymore.  Signs of ill-fitting dentures include:

  • pain
  • discomfort
  • loose teeth
  • bleeding gums
  • swelling
  • ulcers (sores) that last more than two weeks
  • a gum abscess (pus-filled sore on the gum)
  • soreness or cracks in the corner of your mouth
  • bad breath

If you are experiencing any of the above signs, call the experienced dentists at Divine Dental Care and we will be more than happy to advise you on how to fix your denture problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and help restore your smile and chewing function. They can replace all teeth (full dentures) or just a few missing teeth (partial dentures). They are designed to look natural and improve everyday function.

What types of dentures are available?

There are full dentures for patients missing all teeth and partial dentures for those still retaining some natural teeth. Partial dentures may be made from acrylic or include a metal framework for added strength. Your dentist will recommend the most suitable option based on your needs.

What are dentures made from?

Most full dentures are made from acrylic, which is lightweight and durable. Partial dentures may also use acrylic or a metal base for improved support and stability. The artificial teeth are typically made from high-quality acrylic materials designed to look natural.

How are dentures made?

Dentures are created over several appointments. We take impressions of your mouth, record bite measurements, and ensure the fit and appearance are correct before the final denture is made. This process helps ensure comfort, function, and a natural look.

Will dentures affect how I eat or speak?

It may take a short adjustment period to get used to speaking and eating with dentures. Most patients adapt quickly with practice and guidance. Over time, dentures can significantly improve chewing ability and confidence.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures typically last several years, but the fit may change over time as your gums and jaw naturally change shape. Regular check-ups are important to ensure they remain comfortable and functional. Adjustments or relines may be needed over time.

What are the signs my dentures don’t fit properly?

Common signs include soreness, looseness, difficulty chewing, or irritation of the gums. You may also notice clicking sounds or changes in how your bite feels. If this happens, it’s important to have them checked to avoid further discomfort.

Can dentures be repaired or adjusted?

Yes, dentures can often be repaired, relined, or adjusted to improve fit and comfort. If they become damaged or loose, it’s best to contact the clinic promptly. Quick treatment helps maintain function and prevent further issues.
