Clear Aligners
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are clear dental appliances used to correct misaligned teeth and give you a nice straight smile. They are used as an alternative to traditional braces and are made of a special clear plastic material which are formed to fit the shape of your teeth exactly.
What can be corrected?
Misaligned or crooked teeth caused by gaps, crowding, overlapping teeth or tooth size discrepancy can be corrected. Clear aligners used for teeth alignment creates healthier teeth and gums by allowing easier access for cleaning. There is also the added advantage of an increased self-confidence from having a smile with straighter teeth.
What is the treatment process?
Once our dentists confirm you are a candidate, we will take clinical records to make a customised treatment plan. Records include photos of your smile and bite, and a 3D scan of your teeth using our intraoral scanner. These records are put into our 3D planning software where we determine the final ideal alignment and position of your teeth. A series of custom-made clear aligners are then fabricated and issued to you, usually at 3-4 sets at a time. You wear each clear aligner set for 2 weeks (and at least 22 hours a day) until the final position of your teeth is reached.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are custom-made, transparent trays used to gradually straighten teeth. They are a modern alternative to traditional braces and are designed to fit snugly over your teeth. Because they are nearly invisible, most people won’t notice you are wearing them.
2. How do clear aligners work?
They work by applying gentle, controlled pressure to move your teeth into better alignment over time. You’ll wear a series of aligner trays, with each set slightly different to guide your teeth step by step. Regular check-ups help ensure your treatment is progressing as planned.
3. Are clear aligners removable?
Yes, they can be removed when eating, drinking anything other than water, and for brushing and flossing. This makes them more convenient than fixed braces. However, they need to be worn for most of the day to be effective.
4. How long does treatment take?
Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case. Most patients wear clear aligners for several months to around two years. Your dentist will give you a more accurate timeframe after an initial assessment.
5. Are clear aligners comfortable to wear?
Most patients find them comfortable, although there may be some pressure when switching to a new set of trays. This is a normal sign that the aligners are working. Any discomfort usually settles within a few days.
6. Can I eat and drink normally with aligners?
Yes, but aligners should be removed when eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps prevent damage and staining. Good oral hygiene before reinserting them is also important.
7. Do I still need to see the dentist during treatment?
Yes, regular check-ups are important to monitor your progress and ensure everything is moving correctly. These appointments are usually quick and spaced out over the course of treatment. Your dentist will guide you through each stage.
8. Are clear aligners suitable for everyone?
Clear aligners can treat many mild to moderate alignment issues, but they may not be suitable for every case. More complex orthodontic problems may require alternative treatment. Your dentist will assess your teeth and recommend the best option for you.
