About Dr. Andrew Yong

Dr. Andrew Yong graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours from the University of Melbourne in 2003. He has practised for over two decades since.

Andrew has a strong interest in restorative dentistry, particularly dental composites and rebuilding fractured and worn teeth. That work is as much about how a tooth bites and lasts as how it looks.

In addition to restorative work, Andrew is experienced in orthodontics and dental implants, providing patients with a comprehensive range of treatment options under one roof at Divine Dental Care.

What That Work Involves

Rebuilding worn and fractured teeth. Teeth wear down slowly enough that most people do not notice until an edge chips or a tooth becomes sensitive. Grinding is the usual cause, and it flattens the biting edges over years rather than months. Composite resin can be added directly to rebuild those edges in a single visit, without cutting the tooth down for a crown. Where more structure has been lost, a crown may be the more durable answer. Both are covered on our building up worn teeth page, and if grinding caused the wear it usually needs a splint as well, or the same wear simply happens again.

Straightening teeth. Andrew provides braces and clear aligners for cases that suit general practice. Aligners handle tipping movements well and bodily movement less predictably, which is part of what an assessment establishes. The practice has no orthodontist on staff and no registered specialists, so complex jaw discrepancies and cases likely to need surgical planning are referred to a specialist orthodontist rather than taken on here.

Replacing missing teeth with implants. Whether an implant is straightforward comes down to how much bone is there to hold it, which is a question no one can answer by looking in your mouth. We have cone beam CT on site, so that assessment happens here rather than through a referral to an imaging centre. Our guide to whether you have enough bone for an implant explains what the scan actually shows, and the dental implants page covers the stages.

What to Expect at a First Appointment

A first visit is an examination and a conversation. Andrew will look at your teeth and gums, ask what has been bothering you, and explain what he sees and what is optional rather than urgent. If treatment is needed you will get a written plan with itemised costs and your expected health fund rebate before anything is booked. Nothing is done on the day unless you want it to be.

Impressions are taken with an intraoral scanner rather than a tray of putty, which most people find easier to sit through. For suitable cases a crown can be scanned, designed and milled here in one appointment, so there is no temporary crown and no second visit. That is covered on our same-day crowns page.

If it has been several years since your last check-up, say so when you book. It changes how the appointment is planned and it is more common than most people assume.
