Adult Orthodontics in Croydon — It Is Not Just for Teenagers

• Orthodontics

Last updated: September 2026

There is a persistent idea that braces are something that happens in high school and if you missed the window, you missed your chance. That was never true, and it is less true now than ever. A growing proportion of orthodontic patients are adults, and the options available to them do not require looking like a teenager to get straight teeth.

Why Adults Are Doing This Now

The reasons adults seek orthodontic treatment tend to fall into a few categories:

  • Teeth that have shifted over time. Even teeth that were straight in your twenties can crowd or rotate over the following decades. The lower front teeth are particularly prone to this. If you had braces as a teenager and stopped wearing your retainer, you may have noticed things moving back.
  • Treatment that was not done as a child. Not everyone had access to orthodontics growing up, whether because of cost, family circumstances or simply not being offered it. Plenty of adults in their thirties, forties and fifties are addressing something that has bothered them for decades.
  • Functional issues. Crowding makes teeth harder to clean, which leads to decay and gum disease in the long run. A misaligned bite can cause uneven wear, jaw pain and chewing difficulties. Sometimes straightening teeth is not cosmetic at all.
  • Preparing for other dental work. Occasionally, teeth need to be aligned before crowns, implants or bridges can be placed properly. Orthodontics becomes a step in a larger treatment plan.

What Is Different About Adult Treatment

Biology

Adolescent bone is still growing and remodelling actively, which means teeth move through it relatively quickly. Adult bone is denser and more stable. Teeth still move, but the pace is slightly slower and the biological response is different. This does not mean treatment takes dramatically longer. For comparable cases, adult and adolescent treatment times are often similar. But the forces applied need to be more carefully calibrated.

Existing dental work

Adults often come to orthodontics with crowns, fillings, missing teeth, bridgework, or gum recession that teenagers do not have. These do not prevent treatment, but they add complexity. Brackets bond differently to a porcelain crown than to natural enamel. A missing tooth changes how the remaining teeth can be moved. Your dentist needs to plan around what is already in your mouth.

Gum health

Orthodontic treatment puts additional demands on the gums and bone. If there is active gum disease, that needs to be treated and stabilised before braces or aligners start. Moving teeth through inflamed, infected tissue accelerates bone loss rather than improving things. A deep clean may be needed before orthodontic treatment can begin.

Discreet Options Available in Croydon

The biggest barrier for most adults is not the treatment itself. It is the idea of walking into a meeting or a client call with a mouth full of metal. The options available now address that directly.

Clear aligners

Custom-made, removable plastic trays that are nearly invisible when worn. They come out for eating and cleaning. At Divine Dental Care, we use Angel Align and Spark systems. They suit mild to moderate crowding, spacing and some bite issues. For professionals commuting from Croydon, Ringwood or Heathmont to Melbourne's CBD, aligners are often the first choice because they do not alter your appearance in a professional setting.

Ceramic braces

Tooth-coloured brackets that work the same way as traditional metal braces but are far less visible. The wire is still there, but from a normal distance the brackets blend with the teeth. They handle a wider range of cases than aligners and do not depend on patient compliance to stay in the mouth.

Cosmetic braces and six-month smiles

Shorter-course orthodontic systems that focus on aligning the front six to eight teeth, the ones visible when you smile, rather than correcting the full bite. Treatment time is typically six to nine months. These are not suitable for everyone, particularly if the bite needs correction, but for adults whose concern is primarily cosmetic alignment of the front teeth, they offer a faster result. Our six-month smiles article covers this in more detail.

Traditional metal braces

Still the most versatile option for complex cases. If your bite needs significant correction or your crowding is severe, metal braces may be the most effective tool. Some adults choose them pragmatically: they work on the widest range of cases and are the most affordable option.

What Treatment Looks Like as an Adult

The process follows a predictable path:

  1. Assessment. Your dentist examines your teeth, takes records (X-rays, photographs, possibly an intraoral scan), assesses your bite and your gum health, and discusses what you want to achieve.
  2. Treatment plan. You receive a plan that sets out which options suit your case, what each involves, the expected treatment time, and the cost. If only one option is clinically appropriate, you will be told that.
  3. Active treatment. Braces are fitted or aligner trays are provided. You attend regular appointments for adjustments (braces) or progress checks (aligners).
  4. Retention. When the teeth are in position, retainers hold them there. This is not optional. Without retention, teeth will drift back toward their original positions. Retainers are discussed in detail in our retainer article.

Fitting Orthodontics Into a Working Life

Adults in the Maroondah corridor have jobs, commutes and family commitments that make lengthy or frequent dental appointments inconvenient. A few practical points:

  • Adjustment appointments for braces take 15 to 30 minutes every four to eight weeks
  • Aligner check-ins are often shorter and less frequent (every six to ten weeks)
  • We offer Saturday appointments for patients who cannot attend during the week
  • Emergency visits (a broken bracket, a wire poking) are usually quick fixes

For residents of Croydon, Bayswater and Kilsyth, the practice is on Wicklow Ave, a short walk from Croydon station. For those driving from Chirnside Park, Montrose or Lilydale, there is parking on site and along the street.

Is It Worth It at This Age?

That is a personal question, but consider this: if you are forty and the average Australian lifespan is in the low eighties, you have four decades of benefit ahead of you. If the crowding is making cleaning difficult and contributing to recurring decay or gum problems, straightening is a functional investment, not just a cosmetic one.

The fact that you did not have it done as a teenager is not a reason not to do it now. The teeth do not know how old you are.
