Dental Cone Beam CT

What is Dental Cone Beam CT?

Dental Cone Beam CT is a type of computed tomography (CT) technique, which uses x-rays projected outwards in the shape of a cone, to produce 3D images of the mouth, teeth and facial structures.  At Divine Dental Care, we have our own machine to enable our patients to have their 3D imaging taken onsite. We use the highly sophisticated Vatech Green 16, which allows for low dosage radiation to be used during a scan.

When is it used?

Dental Cone Beam CTs can be used to examine the teeth, mouth, jaw, throat, neck and ears.  Once an image is acquired, the dentist may use it for:

What does having a Dental Cone Beam CT involve?

The procedure for taking a scan is very simple. After the patient has removed their jewellery and glasses, the dentist will take them to the scanning area. The patient will then be asked to stand in the correct position, and then asked to bite down gently on a plastic mouthpiece to ensure the head and jaw remain completely still, while the scanner rotates around the patient’s head, taking multiple images. The images are then reconstructed on a computer to bring up a 3D image useful for treatment planning and diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Cone Beam CT scan?

A Cone Beam CT (CBCT) is a specialised 3D dental scan that uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam to capture detailed images of your teeth, jaw, and facial structures. It provides far more detail than standard dental X-rays. This helps your dentist plan treatment with greater accuracy.

Why would I need a CBCT scan?

CBCT scans are often used for complex dental treatments such as implants, orthodontics, or assessing impacted teeth. They can also help diagnose jaw issues, trauma, or abnormalities that are not visible on regular X-rays. Your dentist will only recommend it when more detailed imaging is needed.

Is the scan done at the clinic?

Yes, Divine Dental Care has its own Cone Beam CT machine onsite. This means you can have your scan done during your appointment without needing a referral to another imaging centre. It helps make the process quicker and more convenient.

Is a CBCT scan safe?

Yes, the scan uses a low dose of radiation and is considered safe when used appropriately in dental care. It is only taken when clinically necessary to support diagnosis or treatment planning. Your dentist will always weigh the benefits before recommending it.

What happens during the scan?

The process is simple and usually takes only a few minutes. You’ll be asked to stand still and gently bite on a small mouthpiece while the scanner rotates around your head. The images are then processed into a detailed 3D model for analysis.

Does the scan hurt?

No, the scan is completely painless and non-invasive. There are no needles, injections, or physical discomfort involved. Most patients find it quick and easy.

How should I prepare for a CBCT scan?

Preparation is minimal. You may be asked to remove jewellery, glasses, or any metal objects that could interfere with the image. Otherwise, you can continue your day as normal.

What is the benefit of 3D imaging compared to regular X-rays?

3D imaging gives a much clearer and more detailed view of your teeth, bone, and surrounding structures. This allows for more precise diagnosis and treatment planning, especially for complex dental procedures. It can improve both accuracy and outcomes.
